Renishaw Coastal Precinct sales announced in August 2024 marked an important step in the continued development of the KZN Mid-South Coast. The finalisation of new commercial deals created opportunities for further infrastructure investment, local business growth and employment across the region.
A feature article published by Everything Property explores how these transactions are helping to build momentum around the 1,300-hectare mixed-use precinct and attract further interest in the area.
Stakeholders gathered at the Scottburgh-based site on 7 August 2024 to recognise the development milestones and consider what they could mean for surrounding businesses, communities and investors.

How Renishaw Coastal Precinct Sales Are Supporting Regional Growth
The deals build on the progress already made at Renishaw Hills, the mature lifestyle village established within the precinct.
At the time of the Everything Property feature, Renishaw Hills had recorded approximately R400 million in sales, with property values having increased by 60% since 2016. Around 350 residents were already living within the development, while the first six phases had been constructed and occupied.
This established residential community demonstrated demand for development in the area and helped create a foundation for further investment. The continued progress of Renishaw Coastal Precinct sales indicates growing confidence in both the precinct and the wider KZN Mid-South Coast property market.
“The finalisation of further deals within Renishaw Coastal Precinct indicates that we’re showing value for investors, and realising our vision for the economic revival of the KZN Mid-South Coast,” said Barto van der Merwe, MD of Renishaw Coastal Precinct.
New Commercial Developments Planned For The Precinct
Two of the transactions highlighted in the article involved local businesses with an existing understanding of the Scottburgh market.
An Upmarket Shopping Centre
Cubisol Property Fund acquired a site for the development of an approximately 10,000m² shopping centre. The site’s mixed-use zoning also allows for the possible inclusion of residential apartments.
As the owner of Scottburgh Mall, Cubisol already has experience in the local retail market. The proposed convenience centre is intended to complement the area’s existing retail offering while supporting the growing residential population.
The transaction represents the first commercial development linked to the recent Renishaw Coastal Precinct sales and marks an important step towards establishing a broader mix of amenities within the precinct.
A Petrol Filling Station And Convenience Site
A second transaction involved a petrol filling station, convenience store and fast-food drive-through planned for the main Renishaw entrance circle on Dududu Road.
The development will be undertaken by Hampsons, the local business behind Scottburgh’s first petrol station.
Both commercial sites are positioned near the N2 interchange and one of the main routes into and out of Scottburgh. This provides convenient access for precinct residents, surrounding communities and motorists travelling along the KZN Mid-South Coast.
Infrastructure Investment To Support Long-Term Development
The continued development of the precinct requires more than individual property transactions. It also depends on the infrastructure needed to support future residential, commercial and community growth.
Renishaw Property Developments has been working with Umdoni and eThekwini municipalities while planning for greater self-reliance in areas such as:
- Water provision
- Sanitation
- Refuse removal
- Bulk infrastructure services
Installing bulk services before separate subdivisions are registered is intended to give incoming developers a stronger foundation from which to plan and begin construction.
By combining Renishaw Coastal Precinct sales with long-term infrastructure planning, the development can accommodate growth in a more structured and coordinated way.
Further Development Opportunities Across The Five Nodes
The shopping centre and filling station form part of a much broader development pipeline across Renishaw Coastal Precinct’s five interconnected nodes.
Opportunities and discussions referenced in the Everything Property feature included:
- A new church serving the surrounding community
- A school planned to expand from early childhood development to high school
- Padel courts within Node 1
- A hotel near Crocworld Conservation Centre
- Additional medium- and high-density residential developments
- Light industrial sites positioned near the N2
- Office space suited to the business process outsourcing sector
The range of land uses reflects the precinct’s mixed-use planning model. Rather than developing residential estates in isolation, the long-term plan brings together housing, retail, education, healthcare, employment and recreational facilities.
Supporting Local Businesses And Employment
Local participation remains an important part of the precinct’s development approach.
“We consciously chose to work with local businesses because we want to supplement and enhance the existing structures to attract even further interest in the region,” explained Van der Merwe.
Working with businesses that already understand the local market can help retain economic activity within the region while creating additional opportunities for contractors, suppliers and workers.
The article also highlights plans for a skills hub where community members can register their trades. Contractors and subcontractors would then be able to identify and employ people with relevant skills from nearby communities.
The proposed business process outsourcing sites could create further employment opportunities, particularly for younger residents supported by suitable training and career development programmes.
A Long-Term Development Model For The KZN Mid-South Coast
Only 20% of Renishaw Coastal Precinct’s 1,300 hectares has been allocated for development, with the remaining 80% reserved for conservation.
This planning model allows new residential, commercial and civic development to take place alongside the protection of indigenous forest, wetlands, grasslands and other natural assets.
The precinct is backed by Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of JSE-listed Crookes Brothers Limited, together with property development partner Crocker Properties.
With an anticipated total development value of approximately R15 billion, the precinct represents a long-term investment in the KZN Mid-South Coast and its future economic growth. The latest Renishaw Coastal Precinct sales provide an early indication of the development activity, business growth and employment opportunities that could follow as the precinct expands.
