Community Upliftment: Central to Renishaw Development

Community upliftment efforts at the Renishaw Coastal Precinct are already yielding tangible results, with the story of at least one woman already making headlines.

Maureen Mkhize’s Story

Maureen Mkhize, who never made it past Grade 11 at Sithuthukile High School due to financial hardship, was uplifted by a skills programme run by the newly established Renishaw Hills lifestyle estate, the first development within the precinct.

Mkhize, who is now in her mid-forties, took part in a programme in 2017 that taught her how to make gabions, v-drains, and road caps. After completing the course, she became certified and was able to start her own company.

The course also taught her how to register her company and get set up to make a success out of her life.

Now a stable revenue-generating enterprise, Venka Trading supplies gabion baskets, which are wire frames filled with stones, for retaining wall construction. The products are immensely useful in controlling erosion and are also an attractive landscaping feature.

Renshaw Hills used these gabions in over 25 hectares of construction and landscaping.

As a direct result of Mkhize’s training and certification, she now employs 27 locals—not only ensuring her own economic upliftment but that of other people in the community as well.

She says that this contribution to job creation in the area has been a huge help during times of economic hardship. Even her own children have benefited, with her son being able to finish his schooling and become a qualified teacher today because of Renishaw’s investment in her. Her niece is also gainfully employed at the Suncoast Casino because her studies were funded through a stipend Mkhize received while taking part in the programme.

The Renishaw Coastal Precinct Contribution

Outside of the development of lifestyle estates like Renishaw Hills, up to 142 hectares of land are being contributed to the local community. This is being done through the KwaCele Tribal Council, which seeks to ensure that the development sustains and uplifts its community.

Part of the deal will see 10% of the development company acquired by the community in what is heralded as a thoroughly inclusive buy-out process to yield sustainable growth.

The Renishaw Coastal Precinct also committed R500 million towards President Cyril Ramaphosa’s R1.2 billion investment target that he set back in 2018, thus cementing the development’s role as an economic uplifter and contributor to a better South Africa for all.

The Renishaw Coastal Precinct seeks to provide top-tier development opportunities alongside sustainable, ethical, and responsible practices that benefit all South Africans. Contact us today to find out more.
